Exemple d'action

Les Amis de la DDP au Luxembourg

The aim of this informal group is twofold. The aim is, on one hand, to promote and publicise the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and to encourage its implementation at national level, as well as through development cooperation policy on the other hand.

Mission and objectives of the working group

While it was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018, the UNDROP, which had received the support of only 2 European Union member countries, Portugal and Luxembourg, remains largely unknown despite the crucial progress it represents for rural populations, who are among the most numerous and marginalised on the planet.

While Luxembourg’s support for the adoption of a text that is overwhelmingly supported by developing countries has been very beneficial for the image of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in the eyes of these countries and, more generally, in international human rights bodies, it also brings responsibilities in its wake.

With this in mind, the working group has set itself the task of:

  • Reminding the government of its commitment to recognising farmers’ rights;
  • Promoting the Declaration to all relevant bodies;
  • Encouraging and monitoring its implementation by the competent authorities and by players in development cooperation in practical ways;
  • Encouraging civil society organisations in general and NGDOs in particular to take ownership of the Declaration text.

While more and more experts are identifying small-scale farming as a means of developing sustainable food production systems that are more resilient in the face of climate change, the rights of rural populations are being increasingly undermined or ignored.
